What Exactly Does PGA Golf Stand For?

>> Monday, 22 November 2010

We all have heard the name PGA Golf, usually as we watch our favorite golf tournament on television. We may even have a vague idea as to what they are all about, but for most of us we hear the name and think golf without really knowing what it means. This seemed to be the case when I queried some of my friends and actually when I thought about it I couldn't substantially explain the whole thing myself. So I asked myself, "What is PGA golf?
  • The first step in understanding what the PGA is is knowing what PGA stands for. It stands for the Professional Golfers' Association of America and it is one of biggest sport organizations in the world. The PGA has been in existence since 1916 has been teaching and managing the sport of golf worldwide.
  • Aside from being an organization, PGA golf is also the host to many well known golf tournaments. These meets take place worldwide and are often the crowning achievement and aspiration for many, many golfers. In truth nearly every time you see a golf even on TV you are more than likely watching a PGA golf tournament.
  • Not only is the PGA a figurehead in the world of golf, it also represents a large body of golfing instructors and professionals. These individuals share their skills by teaching new and old players alike in the finer aspects of golf. From the complexity of the perfect swing to grade of the green, the PGA is the authority on everything golf.
  • Lastly and most importantly, PGA golf is the icon of golf for many golfers. While this is not really a concrete aspect of the organization, one cannot help to think of the PGA whenever they think of golf. When people think of basketball they think of the NBA. That is what the PGA is to golf.
If you had any doubts about what the PGA is, they are hopefully laid to rest. The PGA represents a very wide range of golf related topics and PGA golf tournaments are some of the most celebrated in the world. So whether you think of them as the host of a professional tournament or as the leader in the instruction of golf as a sport, you can be sure that the PGA represents both of those aspects and much, much more to thousands of golfers around the world.
